August 3rd - Day 3 - We're On A Roll

Another exciting day in Orlando!
We had an early game today - 10:00 vs. Inglewood Hoops of California. Prior to heading out to Disney's Wide World of Sports, we had a quick team meeting where Rochelle and Michael thanked all those who had done so much for our team - THANK YOU one and all for all efforts great and small - without you we wouldn't be here!

We then headed out to our game. We got to the parking and it was a mess!!! Never seen parking in such a disaray at Disney as we did today. So many events (Basketball, Soccer, Baseball, Softball as well as Tampa Bay Buc's training camp) going on at WWS that parking was "limited". Most of us ended up parking on the median.

Our game today was played on Court #5 in The Milkhouse Stadium. Again, there was much electricity in the air. We also were honored to have Coach Terry's parents in from the Palm Coast for the day to watch the game.

Today's game was an amazing game. Inglewood took an early lead, but our boys stepped it up and by the end of the first quarter, the Kings were up by two. The score was tie at halftime and then we never looked back. What an amazing effort the boys put into this game. They had said yesterday they needed to step up their game and they certainly did. It was an awesome game to watch. The boys played their hearts out and as I have said before, anything they put their hearts to they can accomplish. Final score: Greenburgh Kings 66 Inglewood Hoops 50. We are 2-0 in pool play and have put ourselves in a good position going into tomorrow's last pool game vs. Full Package Athletics from Chicago. We'll need to play with the same intensity to beat them.

Two of the grandparents left after today's game and they were sad to leave - they enjoyed the games and were glad that they were able to be here to see two exciting games.

After getting back to the hotel and a quick lunch, the boys were off to a mandatory meeting held by the AAU "The Complete Athlete". The speaker was from Memphis and both an AAU coach and college coach. The four areas that were the focus of the talk were:

  • Remain Substance Free (both yourself AND those you associate with)'
  • Be Sports Minded (know your game better than your opponent and practice EVERY day)
  • Have Socially Acceptable Behavior
  • Be Academically Challenged

These four areas will allow the boys to attain their goals and ambitions. It is not only important to be an exceptional athlete, you must also be academically excellent as well. The speaker specifically portrayed the example of Derek Rose, the number one pick in this year's NBA draft; his entire life revolved around three priorities: Academics, Sports, and Family.
Other items of interest learned was that all Division I and II schools do background checks on all their prospects as well as review the parent's behavior and attitude.
The boys also learned that all the referees this week are college referees. This was done intentionally so that the boys see how games are actually handled. The boys were each given an agenda/organizer where they were instructed to write in it their goals for the next year for both acamedics and athletics.

The team ended the day with dinner by the pool. Doug and Lori S. were kind enough to offer to pick up dinner from Carraba's and what a feast we had. It was a beautiful evening for the parents to sit and chat while the boys swam in the pool and lounged in the hot tub.

Good Luck Kings on tomorrow's final pool play game.
